PRESENT TECHNOLOGY Lance Harvey Aguilar – 906

As we move from the past, we are able to create and experience more immersive technology, that truly captivates our minds. Today, our immersive technology categorised into (360, VR, 360 VR, Mobile VR, True VR, In-VR, AR, MR)

360

  • 360 immersive content is said to be one of the most well known forms of immersive technology.
  • It is basically found, on almost any online platform including, Youtube, and Facebook.
  • 360 content, is used by pointing the device into any direction, this allows the users to feel as if they are in a different place.

VR

  • VR, meaning virtual reality is also one of the most well known forms of immersive technology
  • This form of immersive technology is used with a HMD (Head Mounted Display), which ‘surrounds’ the user with immersive content.
  • The HMD, allows the user to experience real and imagined worlds, as if they are really there

360 VR

  • Very similar to 360 and VR content
  • It is featuring 360 content, that is presented in VR mode (with HMD)

Mobile VR

  • This form of immersive technology is a HMD, that is well suited towards a specific type of smartphone.
  • Example: Samsung Gear VR, Google’s Daydream, Google Cardboard

True VR

  • True VR Headsets require powerful computers or consoles
  • Example:  HTC ViveOculus RiftPlaystation VR
  • This form of technology can also be used with a leverage sensors, which detects he surroundings and movement of the user.
  • Its content is primarily constructed with CGI and 3D modelling

In-VR

  • When users are ‘In-VR’, they are able to go closer or further in the content.
  • The content will also adjust to the movements made by the user.

AR

  • Augmented Reality presents a digital image on top of the real world, this means that the user is not completely shut off from the world
  • Examples of AR is ‘Snapchat’, where the app overlays an image of a dog, rainbow, cat etc… onto the user’s face
  • Another popular example of AR is ‘Pokemon Go’. This app overlays images of ‘pokemons’ onto the user’s real world.
  • Another example is,used by IKEA. They allow customers to use AR, to essentiallu ‘try out’ a product before even purchasing. By using AR, the users will be able to fit furniture into their homes, without real furniture.

MR

  • MR = Mixed Reality, it is somewhat a mixture AR and VR
  • MR uses a headset (similarly to VR), but it does not completely shut out the user from the real world. But just like AR, the headset places images on top of the real world. As the headset is essentially a pair of glasses.
  • Microsoft, describes it as a ‘holographic computer’
  • This could be mentioned towards the end of the video, as it shifts into the emerging technology

XR

  • Extended Reality
  • Term used to describe the full spectrum of immersive technology (MR, VR, AR etc…)
  • This could be mentioned at the beginning of the video

Today, people are fascinated at what Immersive technology is.  It is incorporated throughout the world form phone apps, gaming, sport, medical training, education and art. So far, it has proven to be useful and beneficial to the world. Immersive technology has gone places, and it has influenced gaming, art, education and sports industries.  The immersive technology today will enable us to essentially experience something new. As we incorporate this technology into almost anything, we could begin a new era, where we do almost anything differently.
